Volunteer - Student Opportunities

Getting Involved

Students are a driving force in our Habitat program. Below are a number of ways that students can get involved. Most projects require a minimum age of 14 years old to volunteer.

Age Requirements

Greater Cleveland Habitat requires a ratio of 1 adult per 6 volunteers under the age of 18. If anyone in your group is 14 or 15, activities for the whole group must be age appropriate for 14-15 year olds

     Construction

  • Ages 14 - 15: May assist with some site work such as painting and landscaping. 14 and 15 year olds cannot be present on a live job-site.
  • Ages 16 - 17: Any project approved for 14 and 15 year olds, plus siding installation, hanging and finishing drywall, and maintaining Habitat lawns.
  • Ages 18 and over: Have no restrictions to volunteer on site

     ReStore

  • Ages 14 and above: Can volunteer in our ReStore.

Some ideas for students under 14 years include:

  • coordinating tool or aluminum can drives
  • arranging fund raisers at their schools or place of worship
  • making housewarming gifts for new Habitat families
  • providing a meal to serve to Habitat worksite volunteers

Campus Chapters – High school and college groups develop teams of volunteers to support Habitat’s mission

Collegiate Challenge – High school and college groups spend time (i.e., over spring break) to help Habitat in Cleveland and around the world.

Inward Bound Summer Youth Program – Six one-week programs inviting high school students to work with Habitat, reflect on their own faith journey, and learn about urban challenges and opportunities through service and simple living.

Internships – Cleveland Habitat sponsors two to five internship opportunities per semester – engaging area undergraduate and graduate students and their schools while providing a meaningful learning experience Contact the Volunteer Department (volunteer@gchfh.org or 216-429-1299, ext. 226) to schedule your volunteer involvement.
